project description:

In May 1980, there was an uprising in Gwangju, South Korea for Democracy. There was a media blackout, and no one was allowed to report it. My father was a journalist at the time, and he was trying to relay what was happening. He was ultimately arrested for his involvement in the movement. The uprising and massacre that the world did not know about disrupted many lives, including our family’s. Our life in Korea was no longer viable due to my father's political activities. We had to abruptly immigrate to the US in 1981. I was twelve.

Utilizing videos and information I found on the internet, I compiled images of significant events in the US in 1980 and placed it on the left side of the corner, and the footage of the uprising in Korea to the right. I juxtaposed the two videos while playing Blondie's 1980's hit "Call Me," and created a dance party.

I created a dance party with two pop songs from the 1980’s (Blondie’s Call Me and the sound effect of the game, Pac Man) interlaced with two projections of found videos from circa 1980 and streamed them juxtaposed, simultaneously. I posted the flyer around UCLA and handed them out.

We danced together while the videos were playing in the background. Some people stopped dancing when they saw scenes of bloody clashes between the army troops and citizens of Korea.
